Tech Tales is our weekly summer story reading series geared for children 12 and under. Each week we present a different story with a corresponding activity about a STEM/STEAM based topic or person.
This week’s book is What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada. This story is a heartwarming tale for anyone who has ever dealt with a problem. No one is too young to learn the importance of courage and persistence. After reading, we will be using our problem solving skills to grab something out of reach.

June 10, 2023 – Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life: Hollywood Legend and Brilliant Inventor by Laurie Wallmark

This recounts Hedy Lamarr’s double life as both a renowned Hollywood actress and an ingenious inventor. June 17, 2023 – A Computer Called Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Helped Put America on the Moon by Suzanne Slade
Are you ready to blast off to explore the amazing story of Katherine Johnson? Join us Friday, June 23rd from 5:30 – 9:00 PM as we unveil a refresh to CMoA’s punch card exhibit. The expanded exhibit tells the story of how punched cards became so prevalent and depended upon in modern computing. From Jacquard’s Loom to Herman Hollerith’s invention of electromechanical processing of cards to tabulate data for the 1890 census, to the late 20th-century use of the IBM family of punch card machines, the punch card was revolutionary at the time. They were even used for matchmaking at the University of Iowa in 1963!
Join us for the exhibit refresh unveiling, punch a souvenir card on an IBM 029, and explore the other exhibits while enjoying live music, complimentary light bites, and a cash bar.

In honor of International Women in Engineering Day, this week’s Tech Tales book is Secret Engineer: How Emily Roebling Built the Brooklyn Bridge by Rachel Dougherty. This inspiring story follows Emily Roebling as she takes charge of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband falls ill during the project, defying gender stereotypes to lead the project on his behalf. Through Emily’s story, young readers will learn the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving their dreams. After the reading, participants will get to engage in their own engineering project.

July 22, 2023 – One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” These famous words were spoken by Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969, when he became the first person to set foot on the moon. As we celebrate the 54th anniversary of this momentous event, Tech Tales will be exploring the incredible journey of the Apollo 13 mission in today’s book, One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh. This book recounts the amazing story of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins as they set out on a historic mission that would ultimately lead to the first moonwalk. In honor of this momentous occasion, Tech Tales will be designing their own lunar rovers to explore the mysteries of the moon and beyond.

As we conclude our 2023 Tech Tales program, we invite you to join us for a final reading of the summer, Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? by Patrice McLaurin. Follow along with a young boy as he uses and appreciates the many inventions created by African-American inventors throughout history. This inspiring and informative book will encourage children to recognize and celebrate the contributions of diverse inventors in shaping our world. To cap off the program, Tech Tale participants will have the opportunity to put their engineering skills to the test by building a miniature zipline to transport computer parts.
