Do you know a curious kid? You know, the one that always asks the why? what? and how? behind everyday things. SciTech Saturdays are here to satisfy some of their curiosity.

This month’s SciTech topic will explain how heat transfers through solids, liquids, and gases.  Why do our computers get so hot?  How can we cool them down?

Workshops begin at 11AM  and 2PM and have limited seating.

Punched cards were widely used throughout much of the 20th century in various industries for record keeping and data processing. Machines used punched cards for data input, output, and storage. Come learn more about how punched card machines were used and punch your own souvenir card on an original IBM 29 to take home during the demo, this Saturday from 2 PM – 4 PM!

Create your own computer from scratch and take it home with you!

In this super fun camp, students learn to design, unassemble and re-assemble, a fully working computer with all the necessary electronic components including a monitor, CPU, keyboard, mouse, and cables. Campers will learn to program, install, and customize the computer, in addition to learning how to care for and repair the machine in future.

This Robotics class targets the absolute beginners. No prior robotics or programming knowledge is required. Students will be able to build and program robots to engage in various challenges such as battle bots, mazes, and more fun and exciting matches. Students will learn principals of building and programming to be successful in their missions.

Keeping pace with a technology driven world, we’ve developed a hands-on blended learning experience that’s fun, rewarding, and challenging. Campers will learn to build smart self-driving vehicles from start to finish! Learning design concepts along with mechanical engineering they will create unique vehicle designs including the addition of sensors, obstacle avoidance, line and light following and more. Campers will come to understand physics concepts such as momentum, acceleration, drag, etc.

During this Programming Logic and Game Design Workshop, campers will learn the basics of programming logic and variables, operators, loops, creating levels and more. Campers design cars that run in their hill climbing challenges, race tracks, at times racing another player. They program characters, create music, and even dance!

“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” These famous words were spoken by Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969, when he became the first person to set foot on the moon. As we celebrate the 54th anniversary of this momentous event, Tech Tales will be exploring the incredible journey of the Apollo 13 mission in today’s book, One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh. This book recounts the amazing story of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins as they set out on a historic mission that would ultimately lead to the first moonwalk. In honor of this momentous occasion, Tech Tales will be designing their own lunar rovers to explore the mysteries of the moon and beyond.

As we conclude our 2023 Tech Tales program, we invite you to join us for a final reading of the summer, Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? by Patrice McLaurin. Follow along with a young boy as he uses and appreciates the many inventions created by African-American inventors throughout history. This inspiring and informative book will encourage children to recognize and celebrate the contributions of diverse inventors in shaping our world. To cap off the program, Tech Tale participants will have the opportunity to put their engineering skills to the test by building a miniature zipline to transport computer parts.
