2023 Summer Camp: Amateur Radio for Kids

Camp Name: Amateur Radio for Kids

Duration: Full Day Camp (M-F) 9AM-4PM
Cost $600

Offered in partnership with the North Fulton Amateur Radio League, this full day/full week camp will offer campers the opportunity to learn about Ham Radio and the science behind it.  Learn everything you need to test for and earn your Ham Radio license while participating in ‘radio fox hunts’, building/soldering your own equipment, setting up antennas and talking to people across the county and the country!

Campers who pass their licensing test will be given a free hand-held radio!

**Before and After extended care available for full day campers from 8:00AM- 5:00PM for an additional cost of $100/ week.

Welcome to Minecraft Labs- A fun way to explore chemistry within the immersive world of Minecraft.

Make pigs fly with helium balloons, create underwater TNT or see what elements make up a grass block. If you can craft a pickaxe in Minecraft, you can learn chemistry. Students engage in the scientific process, reinforcing creative problem solving and engaging experiments. Learn innovative ways to combine and reduce materials . June 10, 2023 – Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life: Hollywood Legend and Brilliant Inventor by Laurie Wallmark

Join us as we celebrate the 82nd anniversary of Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil’s filing of their Secret Communications Patent, which laid the foundation for modern WiFi and Bluetooth systems. In honor of this occasion, we will be reading Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life: Hollywood Legend and Brilliant Inventor by Laurie Wallmark. This recounts Hedy Lamarr’s double life as both a renowned Hollywood actress and an ingenious inventor. Discover how her passion for science and engineering led her to make groundbreaking contributions to the technology we use every day. Don’t miss this chance to learn about the remarkable life of a true trailblazer.  After the story, join us for a hands-on activity, where we will be practicing ways to send secret messages.

In this class students discover cartooning and animation basics using two unique software platforms.  This class allows students to take their imagination to a whole new level.  Create fun cartoons, animations, and stories and learn to publish them as well!

Python is a widely used high level, powerful programming language used by professionals in the industry.

Campers will learn to code and design characters, build game strategy, and use different settings to create a multiplayer live coding strategy game.  “Level Up” your programming to be more challenging and fun while you defeat trolls, ogres, and other enemies!

Students will learn concepts like programming logic, indentations, methods, expressions, control flow, and more during this project based camp!

In today’s exciting read, A Computer Called Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Helped Put America on the Moon, Tech Tales will be exploring the fantastic story of a woman who defied race and gender norms to become a critical component of the team that put America into space, and on the moon. Katherine Johnson was a brilliant mathematician who calculated the trajectories for NASA’s first manned space flight and the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. Despite facing discrimination and obstacles as an African American woman in the 1960s, Katherine’s determination and genius helped make history and inspire generations to come. In addition, Tech Tales will create an out of this world arts and crafts rocket project after the story. Don’t miss out on this incredible journey to inspire the young minds in your life.

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is the ability for computers to do things that are considered characteristic of intelligence: language processing, pictorial interpretations, pattern detection and more! Recently, with the advancement of computing power and ability to process high volumes of data, computers have been able to generate more accurate models that predict responses.

Our kids are growing up in an environment full of A.I. driven devices and it is becoming increasingly important for them to understand and learn to use this technology around them.

Museum After-Hours: Punching Up The Punch Card Exhibit

Join us Friday, June 23rd from 5:30 – 9:00 PM as we unveil a refresh to CMoA’s punch card exhibit. The expanded exhibit tells the story of how punched cards became so prevalent and depended upon in modern computing. From Jacquard’s Loom to Herman Hollerith’s invention of electromechanical processing of cards to tabulate data for the 1890 census, to the late 20th-century use of the IBM family of punch card machines, the punch card was revolutionary at the time. They were even used for matchmaking at the University of Iowa in 1963!

Join us for the exhibit refresh unveiling, punch a souvenir card on an IBM 029, and explore the other exhibits while enjoying live music, complimentary light bites, and a cash bar.

Tickets are $25.00 if purchased in advance.

In honor of International Women in Engineering Day, this week’s Tech Tales book is Secret Engineer: How Emily Roebling Built the Brooklyn Bridge by Rachel Dougherty. This inspiring story follows Emily Roebling as she takes charge of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband falls ill during the project, defying gender stereotypes to lead the project on his behalf. Through Emily’s story, young readers will learn the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving their dreams. After the reading, participants will get to engage in their own engineering project.

Every child should have exposure to the basics of computer science and what better way to do it through making games!

Your camper will learn the fundamentals of game design while creating amazing Galactic space adventures using the programming language “Lua”.  They will also learn to use features such as a selection tools, zooming, grid-snapping, and flood fill in order to craft worlds made up of actors, gadgets, and spaceships.
